Danish Politicians Celebrate Democratic Victory in US Midterms

The foreign minister followed the results at a Democratic senator’s party in Georgia, while politicians back home posted their congratulations on X and Facebook.

The article has been updated with Denmark Democrat leader Inger Støjber’s comments.

On Wednesday morning, results are coming in for the American midterm election. Democrats have won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Danish politicians across the political spectrum have been quick to share their views celebrating the Democratic victory.

Foreign Minister in Georgia, USA

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen of the Moderates (Moderaterne) spent election night in Georgia at the election night party of Democratic incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff, who has been re-elected.

Løkke Rasmussen spoke to TV 2 at the celebration, saying, “It’s hard to interpret as anything other than a signal from the American voters to their president.”

He added, “I also think you can sense that in the places where Trump has actively pushed Republican candidates forward, where others could also have been chosen, for example here in Georgia, they’ve been given a proper slap on the wrist.”

“Congratulations to the USA”

Political spokesperson of the Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten) Pelle Dragsted took to X on Wednesday morning, where he celebrated the Democratic victories.

He wrote, “Congratulations to the USA. Congratulations to all of us. Trump and the billionaires lost. The people won.

“The significance cannot be overestimated. Today we are seeing the end of the MAGA movement and Trump’s oligarchy.”

Leader of the Green Left (Socialistisk Folkeparti) and Minister of the Economy and Interior Pia Olsen Dyhr also celebrated the election in a post on Facebook, writing, “Congratulations to the Americans.”

Deputy Chairman of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet) Mogens Jensen also posted on Facebook about the result.

He wrote, “How we have waited for a signal from the USA that there is another path than the terrible mess and the bleak development that Donald Trump has dragged the USA and the world through during his time as president.”

Danish right joins in

The Danish political right is also celebrating the Democratic victory in the United States.

Leader of the Conservatives (Det Konservative Folkeparti) Mona Juul took to X, where she wrote, “Trump loses. The Democrats secure a majority in both chambers of Congress. And just as important: Trump has accepted the election. It’s going to be a good Wednesday.”

Liberal Alliance leader Alex Vanopslagh wrote a longer post on X where he said, “I hoped that Trump and the Republicans would get one right on the nose at the midterm election. And one must say that has happened”

He ended the post with, “We need a USA that is functional, even if the US president isn’t.”

The party’s sole member of the European Parliament Henrik Dahl also commented on X, where he wrote, “Crushing defeat for Vladimir Putin in the American midterm elections.”

Leader of the Denmark Democrats (Danmarksdemokraterne) Inger Støjberg wrote on X, “The election result in the USA is a no to Trump’s direction. A no that I fully and wholeheartedly support. The MAGA movement has left a trail of chaos in its wake — not least in relation to Greenland. I hope the Republicans soon wake up.”

Member of the Folketing for Venstre Jacob Jensen also wrote a post on Facebook, saying, “The Democrats have won a landslide victory. Trump is a ‘lame duck’,” before adding, “The sun is shining. It’s going to be a lovely day.”
