Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal data The Danish Dispatch collects when you read our site or contact us, why we collect it, and what rights you have. We keep it short and plain, and we collect as little as we can.

Who is responsible for your data

The data controller is:

“The Danish Dispatch” is the name we publish under.

When you read our website

When you visit danishdispatch.dk, our web host receives technical information that every browser sends, such as your IP address, browser type and the page you asked for. This is needed to show you the site and keep it secure. Our web host is DanDomain (team.blue Denmark A/S) in Denmark. Server logs are kept according to DanDomain’s standard retention period.

Cookies and statistics. If you say yes in our cookie banner, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which articles are read. If you say no, these statistics cookies are not set. Our Google tag script is downloaded when a page loads, which sends your IP address to Google, but no statistics are collected and nothing is stored on your device unless you say yes. Read the details, and change your choice at any time, in our cookie policy.

Embedded Facebook posts. Some articles show a post from Facebook, which loads only if you accept the “Advertisement” category in our cookie banner. When you accept, your browser sends data such as your IP address to Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd. We and Meta are jointly responsible for that transfer (legal basis: your consent, GDPR art. 6(1)(a)). Meta alone is responsible for what it does with the data afterwards and may transfer it to the US. See Meta’s privacy policy.

Legal basis: for the technical data, our legitimate interest in running a secure website (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). For statistics, your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)).

When you email us

If you email us with a tip, a question, a correction or a complaint, we receive your name, email address and whatever you choose to tell us. We use it to answer you and to handle your request. Our email is hosted by DanDomain (team.blue Denmark A/S) in Denmark.

Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering you and handling complaints (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).

Our journalism

When we research and write articles, we may process information about people in the news. Most of the data protection rules do not apply when we process personal data only for journalistic purposes (Danish Data Protection Act, section 3(8)). We still keep that data secure and have data processing agreements with our suppliers (GDPR Articles 28 and 32). This exception does not cover the rest of this policy. Emails you send us, cookies and site statistics are covered by the full rules described below. You can read more in the Danish Data Protection Agency’s guidance on media.

Because The Danish Dispatch is registered with the Danish Press Council (Pressenævnet) under the Media Liability Act, you can complain about what we have published to us or to the Press Council. See our complaints page.

Information from sources is always treated in confidence.

Newsletter

If you have signed up for our newsletter, we hold the following data about you:

  • your name, to personalise our emails to you
  • your email address, to send you the newsletter, articles and updates
  • your nationality and postcode, for our internal analyses

The legal basis is your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)), which you gave when you signed up.

Opens and clicks. Our emails contain a small invisible image (a tracking pixel), and the links in them go through Mailchimp before they reach our site. This tells us whether and when you opened an email, which links you clicked, and technical details such as your email program, device and approximate location based on your IP address. We use it to see which stories readers find useful, to check that our emails arrive, and to improve the newsletter. We do not use it for advertising and we do not share it with anyone except Mailchimp, which handles it for us as our data processor.

The legal basis is your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a) and the Danish cookie rules, which also cover tracking pixels), which you give when you sign up. We keep this data for as long as you are signed up, and delete or anonymise it within 30 days after you unsubscribe.

You can avoid open tracking by setting your email program not to load images automatically, and avoid click tracking by not clicking the links in the email and going to danishdispatch.dk directly instead. To stop all tracking, unsubscribe with the link at the bottom of every newsletter, or email us at jonas.laursen@danishdispatch.dk.

The newsletter is sent with Mailchimp (The Rocket Science Group LLC, owned by Intuit Inc., USA), which acts as our data processor. We have a data processing agreement with Mailchimp to make sure your data is protected. Because Mailchimp is based in the USA, your data is transferred there. We rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (Commission decision (EU) 2023/1795), and on the EU’s standard contractual clauses where the Framework does not apply.

We keep your data for as long as you are signed up. If you unsubscribe, we delete or anonymise your data within 30 days. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link at the bottom of every newsletter, or by emailing us at jonas.laursen@danishdispatch.dk.

Who we share data with

We do not sell your data. We only share it with companies that help us run the site, and only so they can do that job, and, if you accept embedded posts, with Meta (see below). For each one, this is where your data goes and the legal basis for any transfer outside the EU/EEA:

  • DanDomain (team.blue Denmark A/S), Denmark: web hosting and email. Data stays in the EU, so there is no transfer outside the EU/EEA.
  • Google (Google Ireland Ltd and Google LLC, USA): Google Analytics, only if you accept statistics cookies. Transfers to the USA are covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (Commission decision (EU) 2023/1795).
  • CookieYes, United Kingdom: runs our cookie banner and stores your cookie choice. Transfers to the UK are covered by the EU’s adequacy decision for the UK (Commission decision (EU) 2025/2574).
  • Mailchimp (The Rocket Science Group LLC / Intuit Inc.), USA: sends our newsletter and records opens and clicks, only if you have signed up. Transfers to the USA: see the newsletter section above.
  • Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd (Facebook), Ireland: shows embedded Facebook posts, only if you accept advertisement cookies. Meta is not our data processor. We and Meta are jointly responsible for the transfer of your data when the post loads; Meta alone is responsible for what it does with it afterwards and may transfer it to the US. See the section on reading our website above.

We do not use any other data processors.

How long we keep it

  • Emails from readers (tips, questions, corrections and complaints): up to 2 years after the matter is closed, unless we need them longer for a complaint case.
  • Statistics: Google Analytics keeps this data for up to 14 months.
  • Newsletter, including open and click data: as long as you are signed up, and deleted or anonymised within 30 days after you unsubscribe.
  • Your cookie choice: 1 year, after which we ask again.

Do you have to give us data?

You do not have to give us any personal data to read the site. If you email us, we need your email address to reply. No law or contract requires you to give us personal data.

Automated decisions

We do not use automated decision-making or profiling.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

  • see the personal data we hold about you
  • have incorrect data corrected
  • have your data deleted
  • object to our processing, or ask us to limit it
  • receive your data in a portable format, where this applies
  • withdraw your consent at any time, for example by changing your cookie settings

Complaints to Datatilsynet

If you are not happy with how we handle your personal data, you can complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet) at www.datatilsynet.dk.

We will update this page if we change how we handle personal data.
