Nothing Normal About It: Discount Chain Sets Records and Plans Big Expansion

After a record year, Normal plans to double its workforce and open hundreds of new stores every year.

The Danish discount variety chain Normal has had a very positive fiscal year, according to its annual report.

The report sees the company taking its highest ever recorded revenue as well as its highest ever profit.

Given the positive progression of the chain, it now plans a rapid expansion across markets with its ambitious seven-year plan.

2025/26 annual report

In the annual report, according to Børsen, Normal reports revenue of 17.8 billion kroner for the fiscal year 2025/26.

This marks a significant rise from the previous year, when revenue was 15.2 billion kroner, which at that time was a new record.

The report also said that the profit for the year had been just under 1.2 billion kroner, the first time the company’s profit cleared a billion kroner.

Big expansion since 2013

The first Normal store opened in 2013 in Silkeborg, and since then, the company has developed into a large chain company, present in many markets.

Normal currently has over 1,000 stores across 14 countries, including significant presences, aside from Denmark, in countries such as Norway, Sweden, and France.

Over the last year, the company grew by 143 stores and entered the markets of Ireland, Austria, Slovakia, Czechia, and Romania.

Big plans for the future

According to Jakob Maarbjerg, the company’s CEO, Normal has a goal for the next six or seven years which includes getting to about 2,500 stores and doubling the number of employees, which is currently at 17,000.

Reaching this goal would require opening between 200 and 250 new stores every year and continued growth and success.

To Børsen, he spoke of the importance of hiring good talent, focusing on talent and drive, while also warning that, during the expansion, the company would need to be careful not to get bogged down by bureaucracy.

He also told Børsen, “With the reception we’ve received in the new countries, we’ve gained even more appetite for more stores and new countries.”
