Storm Gusts Bring Down Trees and Cancel Ferries Across Denmark

Strong winds overnight brought down trees on motorways, led to restrictions on the Great Belt and Little Belt bridges, and cancelled ferries. The wind is easing, but DMI has a high-water warning for the west coast of Jutland on Sunday night.

The night between Saturday and Sunday saw strong winds and heavy rain.

Trees were brought down on motorways, restrictions have been introduced on driving over bridges, and ferries have been cancelled.

Overnight, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) warned of storm gusts in the north and west of Jutland. It also has a category two high water warning on the west coast of Jutland for Sunday night.

Roads and bridges

The Great Belt Bridge, which links Zealand and Funen, is open as of Sunday morning. However, trailers under 2.5 tonnes are banned from crossing due to the wind.

On the Little Belt Bridge between Funen and Jutland, drivers of wind-sensitive vehicles have also been advised not to cross.

Main roads across the country have been hit by falling trees overnight too.

Trees came down overnight on the E20 between Rønninge and Nyborg on Funen, on the E45 between Frederikshavn and Sæby in North Jutland, and near Nykøbing Falster.

Funen Police have warned, “We are currently receiving a number of reports of fallen trees and water on the roadway across the whole of Funen.”

Ferries cancelled

Ferry passengers face significant disruption.

Bornholmslinjen has cancelled half of its Sunday sailings to and from Bornholm, and Langelandslinjen has cancelled departures until 10:15.

Some Color Line and Fjord Line routes to Norway are also cancelled. Rødby–Puttgarden, the main ferry link to Germany, was cancelled overnight.

Storm threshold passed at Røsnæs

The technical threshold for a storm categorisation was passed in a measurement on the west of Zealand at Røsnæs Lighthouse.

Here, an average wind speed of 24.6 metres per second was measured, with the threshold for a storm being 24.5 metres per second. DMI has not yet checked the measurement.

What to expect

The wind eased on Sunday morning, and DMI’s last wind warning ended at 08:00 on Sunday. But the coasts can still see storm gusts during the day.

DMI expects many showers on Sunday, possibly with hail and thunder.

From 23:00 on Sunday to 04:00 on Monday, the high water warning is in force on the west coast of Jutland. DMI expects the water to rise up to 3.2 metres above normal in the Wadden Sea, peaking around 02:00.

DMI warns of local flooding and advises people to stay away from threatened coastal areas.
